Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating

Holiday EatingThis holiday season, we may eat a few too many cookies, or drink a little too much wine. The challenge for most people after a full on holiday-bender is that we’ve gotten used to parties and festive feasts every night of the week. Check out these tips for managing your weight, while still enjoying everything this joyful time of year has to offer!

Starting the day off right

Breakfasts during the holidays probably look different than on a workday or normal weekend, which often leaves you feeling like the whole day is already a write-off! Plan to start every day of your healthy holidays with a healthy breakfast- something that includes protein, fiber and healthy fats. For example, Greek yogurt with berries and almonds. This will fuel your daily activities and start you off feeling great about the day to come!

If you are not hungry, eat less!

Before you start your meal, check in with yourself- are you truly hungry or are you just eating because you made the reservation for a certain time or because everyone else is heading to the buffet? When it comes time for a meal, stop and tell yourself that this is not your last chance for something tasty before your new year resolutions take effect.

Stock up on snacks

Having healthy snacks on hand will save you calories and cash during your longer-than-expected shopping trip, or stuck in traffic on the way to family dinner. Some great ideas include fresh fruit (clementine’s are amazing this time of year), almonds, low protein bars, or your favorite veggies and hummus. Having healthy snacks are also important to helping you manage hunger between meals.

Be kind to yourself if you do gain weight

Whether you choose to abide by one or all of the tips listed above, and then get through the holidays only to find you’ve still gained weight- take a breath and let it go. Happiness is more important to health than what registers on the scale. Get back to those healthy eating habits, sleep lots and get back to the gym!
