Detoxing after the holidays
Try these 7 simple steps to help get you BACK ON TRACK after the holidays!
Start your first week back with high protein high fiber breakfast to help get your metabolism and digestive system back on track. Egg whites and a bowl of oatmeal, or protein powder stirred into your oatmeal with flaxseed and chia is a great idea!
Include DETOX tea as part of your water intake. Digestive teas and detox tea can help clean out the system by helping to flush out toxins, alcohol and sugar from the body. A clean liver and lymph means a fully functioning system. You will start to feel more regulated energy sooner by flushing the system. Also be sure to include lemons and limes in your water to improve cleansing, immune function and increase your Vitamin C intake.
Include Vit B6 rich foods into your diet. (lentils, chickpeas, pistachios, lean red meat, sunflower seeds) B6 can help decrease the “hangover symptoms”.
GO Vegetarian! Well, you don’t have to turn Vegan or Vegetarian completely, but try adding in more vegetarian options especially when attempting to get back on the wagon! Try making a vegetarian Chili or soup. Drinking alcohol and eating high sugary foods can cause your blood sugars to be all over the place. Drinking alcohol specifically, depletes salt and potassium levels, so replacing them by eating a hearty vegetarian chili will help bring balance back to the system. High-fat foods empty more slowly from the stomach. By eliminating meat you'll slash the fat, and get a health serving of protein and fiber with beans.
Take Milk Thistle. Milk thistle (silymarin) Along with helping to lower cholesterol levels and regulate blood sugars, Milk Thistle is an herbal supplement that detoxifies and protects vital liver functions and more. The liver plays a large role in metabolizing fat, a clean liver = more fat burned!
Cut some carbs and slightly increase your protein to combat hunger caused by increased amounts of refined carbs and sugar from all those holiday treats. Sometimes you may think you are hungry, but you may just be experiencing higher blood sugars due to all the “extras” consumed over the holidays. Add 1-1.5 oz of extra protein to your meal portions your first week back eating clean, to help combat the cravings and hunger. Drink extra water as sometimes the body is actually just dehydrated and not actually hungry.
Book a deep tissue massage and do hot yoga to help detox fascia. Be sure to drink plenty of water before and after both.
